Afrikaans is one of the two home languages, these home languages require that the student gets 40%  of the score. It may also be offered as a first and second additional language.

With the knowledge you already have of Afrikaans, studying the past papers gives you a leap in your readiness for the matric examinations. It is necessary that you show proficiency in grammar, and comprehension to pass this subject.

Matric Home, First Additional and Second Additional Language

The past papers along with their memos have been uploaded online and are available on the Department of Basic Education's website. As earlier mentioned, Afrikaans can be offered as Home Language, First Additional Language and Second Additional Language, let us look into these concepts.

Home Language: This language is taken to be your primary language, it is believed to be your mother-tongue. There are two subjects that can serve as your Home Language - English and Afrikaans.

First Additional Language: The First Additional Language sometimes abbreviated as FAL in a sense can be understood as the second language after the Home Language. You study this language in addition to the Home Language, and it is required that at least two languages be selected for examinations.

Second Additional Language: The second Additional Language is optional, it is not mandatory that you select this for your examinations, it complements both Home and First Additional Languages.
